Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Q

What do I need for my smoke detector inspection when I sell my house?

    A

If you have an older home with battery operated smoke detectors you must have on on every occupied level of the home, basement, first floor, second, etc.

If you have a newer home with hard wired or 110v smoke detectors run off of your homes electric you must make sure they all work and if they are interconnected, meaning when one goes off they all go off, you must make sure that they all operate as intended.

  • Q

What else do I need to have before I sell my home?

    A

You also need a fire extinguisher, minimum size 2A, 10BC and no more then 10lbs. This must be mounted within 10 feet of your kitchen, preferably near an exit or a way out. You also need a Carbon Monoxide detector mounted within 10 feet of all sleeping areas. Homes with sleeping areas on multiple levels will need more then one.

  • Q

Why do I need to have an electrician or alarm company test the smoke detectors in my rental property?

    A

The New Jersey Division of Fire Safety requires that all fire detection systems are inspected annually. You must contact your alarm company or have an electrician come and put the system on test while being inspected.

  • Q

Why am I being written a violation for this (fill in whatever you like), its been like that for years?

    A

There is no statute of limitations for fire code violations. Just because a violation went unnoticed for days, months, or even years, does not negate the violation. Once it is written it must be corrected.
