In 1996, the Boroughs of Raritan and Somerville, along with the southeastern portion of Bridgewater, jointly received designation from the New Jersey State Planning Commission, establishing the first NJ-municipal Regional Center in the state. The Regional Center Partnership of Somerset County, Inc., became the non-profit organization empowered to provide a coordinated planning framework that would enhance quality of life while ensuring a favorable climate for business.
