NJ American Water - Water Main Replacement Project

Posted February 15, 2024
To our neighbors in Raritan Boro-

On or about Wednesday 2/21/24 NJ American Water will begin a water main replacement project on Thompson Street, Bell Avenue, Anderson Street, & 5th Street in Raritan Boro.  CRJ Contracting, NJAW`s qualified contractor, will begin the project by excavating test holes at the water shut off valve by the curb of every property in order to verify service line material for each home. Following the test holes, CRJ Contracting will begin the water main replacement in the street. These projects will replace the aging 6" water main with new 12" Ductile Iron and are being done to improve water service reliability as well as increase water volume for firefighting purposes. New fire hydrants will be installed, as well as new 1" service lines for each home/building from the street to the curb valve. These projects are being undertaken, amongst others nearby, to rectify the issues Raritan Boro experienced during the 36” water main break on Rt 206 over 4th of July weekend 2023. Completion of this work will create redundancy in NJAW`s system and allow for better water flow throughout the Boro in case of such an event in the future.

The project will progress in the following stages:

1) Installation of new 12" Ductile Iron pipe
2) Flushing/water quality sampling
3) Installation of new service lines for homes/buildings
4) Disconnecting and capping old water main

In the event that an unknown water line is hit during excavation it may be necessary to shut down the water main in order to Safely repair the broken line. If that occurs,  we will do everything in our power to notify the residents but in emergency situations sometimes it’s NOT possible. We will work with the contractor to rectify the  problem as quickly as possible and get the water back on. Aside from any unforeseen situations (i.e., damaging a water line that was not known to exist, the old pipe  leaking, etc.) water service will NOT be interrupted during the project with the exception of:

1) Connecting the individual new service line into customers line at the curb (approx. 2 hours)

More information will be given to residents prior to this phase of the project taking place.

Traffic control will be coordinated through CRJ Contracting & Raritan Police. Working hours will be Mon-Fri, 7am-4pm. Resident access in/out will be maintained as much as possible with the help of Bridgewater PD. Full access to/normal parking on the street will remain in place afterhours and on weekends. Trenches will be base (Asphalt) paved at the end of each workday. Any required ground/sidewalk restorations will be completed at the conclusion of the project. Final paving of the street will occur after sufficient time has passed allowing everything time to settle. NJAW & CRJ Contracting will make every effort to make things as convenient as possible for everyone while the job is progressing. If you have any questions, special requests or special accommodations needed, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Again, NJAW thanks you for your patience and understanding as we work to improve your water service in Raritan Boro

Sincerely,
NJ American Water
